Leaves, pollen and plant matter – a recurring problem for outdoor swimming pools
Autumn is approaching, and for many outdoor swimming pools this means increased amounts of leaves and other organic material in the pools. When this material enters the circulation system, the strainer basket can quickly become blocked, which can lead to reduced flow, cavitation, vibrations and a significant need for manual cleaning.
At the Lögarängsbadet outdoor swimming pool in Västerås, the problem had become particularly acute. During periods of high birch pollen counts, the pollen load could become extreme – on some occasions amounting to a whole wheelbarrow’s worth of pollen in the filter basket overnight.
The solution – automatic flushing
In 2025, EnviroProcess installed Herborner’s self-cleaning strainer, the SCC (Self Control Cleaning), at the Lögarängsbadet outdoor pool.
The system automatically flushes the strainer and directs leaves, pollen and other plant matter into the drains. At Lögarängsbadet, the flushing takes place automatically at intervals of approximately three to four hours.
The results following the installation have been clear:
- The problems with cavitation and vibrations have been resolved.
- Blockages in the sieve basket have been almost completely eliminated.
- The flow is more stable and the risk of service interruptions has been reduced.
- The need for manual cleaning has been significantly reduced.
- Water consumption during flushing is low.
