Analytical equipment and daily sampling

From colouring-in tests to daily monitoring of your parameters! Regulatory requirement HSLF-FS 2021:11.

Monitoring of disinfectant efficacy. The operator should check the free chlorine and pH levels in pools where chlorine is used as a disinfectant every day the pool is open for bathing. These parameters should be checked several times a day in larger facilities and in high-temperature pools.

Where automatic pH control and disinfectant dosing equipment is present, the operator should check its readings daily. The operator should also check bound and total chlorine levels daily. The results of the checks should be documented.

Tips

  • Staining tests* provide results at the appropriate point in the basin. The last place to be stained is suitable for sampling.
  • Check all pools, every day!

Different basins have different conditions and loads. It is therefore essential that sampling is carried out in each individual basin, even if several basins are connected to a common water
treatment.

  • The colouring test is a mandatory test and is performed according to SS EN 15288. Read more.

Lilian Labs - Analytical equipment

Chlorine reaction time faster with LILIAN than with 10 mm cuvettes?

To determine the chlorine value in the water, a distinction is made between two forms: free chlorine, which is available for disinfection, and bound chlorine, which has already reacted and can no longer contribute to swimming pool hygiene. When measuring with photometers, both values should be determined one after the other: first the free chlorine, then the total chlorine value. If the measured free chlorine value is subtracted from the total chlorine, the value for bound chlorine in the water is obtained.

When measuring with photometers using 10 mm cuvettes, it is usually necessary to wait between 60-120 seconds between measurements for free chlorine and total chlorine. This time is required for the chemical reaction that causes the colour change for total chlorine.

We are therefore often asked: How is it possible that LILIAN can measure both values within 60 seconds, is a different chemical used here?

No, the chemicals in SensoSticks for LILIAN are defined by DIN19643 and ISO 7393-2. The reason lies elsewhere: Due to the microstructures of the SensoStick, the smaller sample volume and thus the significantly smaller amount of chemicals, the reaction in the SensoStick takes place much faster than in 10 mm cuvettes, namely within seconds. This is one of the reasons why the measurement of chlorine and pH with LILIAN takes less than 1 minute.
